India's Uflex breaks ground on €66m films plant in western Russia

Leading Indian flexible packaging group Uflex Ltd. is reported to have broken ground in the construction of a plastics films production plant in western Russia.

At a recent ceremony, Uflex laid the foundation stone for the new facility to be operated by group offshoot FlexFilms International in the Stupino Kvadrat industrial zone south east of the Russian capital Moscow.

Details of the €66m investment project, revealed by the Moscow Regional government in European media reports, stated that the FlexFilms business is expected initially to create 150 jobs. Production at the new operation is scheduled to go on-stream during 2020.

The Russian facility is due to manufacture biodegradable film products alongside other films in its portfolio, the Moscow Region governor Andrei Vorobyev is quoted as revealing. A new local business FlexFilms Rus LLC, got the official go ahead for the plant in November last year.

This expansion is in line with a global growth strategy highlighted by Uflex, India’s largest multinational flexpack company, in 2017 when it revealed its ambitious plan to double the number of its plants by 2025.

Two years ago Uflex was in preliminary discussions about expansion projects in several areas of the world including Eastern Europe and specifically the former Soviet CIS states, markets of particular interest to the group, according to Flex Films CEO Anantshree Chaturvedi.

FlexFilms, based in Noida near India’s capital New Delhi, already operates a number of packaging manufacturing sites in India, besides units in Poland, Dubai, Egypt, Mexico and the US. Overall, it turns out around 337,000 tons of plastic film per year.

The Uflex subsidiary produces a wide product range including BOPP, BOPET, and cast polypropylene films as well as other coated material and flexible packaging.

FlexFilms, which offers metallising and different forms of film coating processes, runs an 8.7m wide 500 m/min BOPET film line along with an enhanced 10,800tpa high-barrier metalliser at its sole European plant in Poland.
