Golden Compound and Alpla bring a world first Biodegradable Coffee Capsule compostable at Home

Golden Compound, Ladbergen, the materials manufacturer and Alpla, Austria has developed a market-ready world first biodegradable coffee capsule that consumers can dispose of in their home compost.

Made from the material Golden Compound green, the capsule comprises an organically based material and ground natural fibres from sunflower seed shells. The capsule and filter fleece, free from aluminum and genetically modified organisms, are completely biodegradable in the garden compost within a maximum period of six months. Alpla offers the capsule and the garden-compostable lid to the customers.

Golden Compound uses sunflower seed shells, a by-product of the food industry and not in competition with food production, acting as a reinforcing material. Golden Compound green thus protects fossil resources and reduces the carbon footprint. The process of composting the capsule generates humus, and the coffee grounds contain valuable plant nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen.

Conforming to various certificates, the material has unique characteristics: the oxygen barrier is very much comparable with conventional plastics such as PP-EVOH-PP. The monolayer coffee capsule does not need outer packaging and is aroma-proof. In addition, Golden Compound green conforms to the standards ‘OK compost HOME’ and ‘OK biodegradable SOIL’ from TÜV.

Alpla, one of the leading companies involved in plastic packaging, produces custom-made packaging systems, bottles, closures and moulded parts at 176 sites across 45 countries. Alpla’s high-quality packaging has applications in a wide range of areas such as food and drinks, cosmetics and care products, household detergents, washing and cleaning agents, pharmaceutical products, engine oils, and lubricants.

Golden Compound develops and produces innovative materials with up to 70% ground natural fibres from sunflower seed shells, a by-product of the food industry. The natural fibre does not compete with areas of agricultural use.
