Alpla develops world’s first home compostable coffee capsule

Austrian Packaging firm Alpla has developed what it describes as the “world's first” biodegradable coffee capsule, which is certified by TüV as both biodegradable and home compostable.

The capsule has been developed in cooperation with Golden Compound GmbH, a German start-up specialised in manufacturing compounds from sunflower husks.

The product, Alpla said 15 Oct, is made from ‘Golden Compound green’ which comprises a bio-based material reinforced with fibres from sunflower husks.

The Nespresso-compatible capsule and filter fleece are completely biodegradable in the garden compost within a maximum of six months and are free from aluminium and genetically modified organisms, according to Alpla.

The material also has excellent characteristics, including an oxygen barrier which is “very much comparable” with conventional plastics such as PP‐EVOH‐PP.

The monolayer coffee capsule is aroma‐proof without outer packaging.

Alpla, which is displaying the capsules during the Fakuma trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, said Vorarlberg, Austria-based Amann Kaffee is the first company to use the product.

The coffee roaster is presenting its new Compresso capsule, containing fair trade organic coffee, at the consumer fair ‘Gustav’ trade show to be held in Dornbirn, Austria 20-21 Oct.

According to Alpla, the capsule is available in several colours upon request and the filter fleece is easily printable.
